Herman Heinrich Kohues was born 31 Dec 1826 in Ostbevern, Westfalen, Prussia. He was the son of Georg Henricus Kohues and Anna Maria Gertrud Piegelbrock. Hermann learned the trade of shoemaker, in his native land. He lived on a family farm at Dorfbauerschaft 62, in Ostbevern. Hermann left home on 12 Sep 1852 and traveled by way of Glandorf to Bremen then on to the U.S. arriving at the port in New Orleans on 29, Nov. 1852. He sailed from Bremen to New Orleans on the ship Uhland. The Uhland was a 3-masted, square rigged sailing ship and launched on 23 September 1847. Hermann was one of 3 brothers to immigrate to America. They all settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Hermann Heinrich Kohues Americanized his name to Herman Kohus after arriving in America. Herman signed his declaration for citizenship on 5 June 1854. He was married to a Prussian emigrant, Elizabeth Mielenbrink 1838-1907 on 28 Oct 1856 at St. Philomena Church, in the Over-The-Rhine Neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Herman and Elizabeth had 7 children, Veronica, Bernard, Louis, Minnie, Louisa, Emma and Clara. Herman applied his trade as a shoemaker in Cincinnati while both his brothers living there, Heinrich and John were Tailors. He and wife Elizabeth were living at 1703 Western Avenue at the time of his death on 30 May 1900. Herman Kohus is buried in Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. His wife Elizabeth Mielenbrink died in Nov 1907 and is also buried there.
