Charles Ottis Hargis 1896-1976

Charles Ottis Hargis was born 4 Sep 1896 in Rowan County, Kentucky, the son of William Norvel Hargis and Nancy (Gearhart) Hargis. He was raised on a farm in Rowan County along with 6 siblings, Eugenia E., Sally Ann, Lottie M.1902-1903, Thomas Allen, Jack Earl and Mary Avonelle. Charles Ottis Hargis ("Ottis") was a WWI veteran and entered the U.S. Army on 12 Sep 1918. At some time after returning home from the service he hired on with the B & O Railroad. The job required travel and while in West Virginia he met his future wife Maudie Marie Chapman. Maudie was working in a diner at the time. They were married on 1 Sep 1923 in Rowan County, Kentucky. Together they raised 8 children, William Ottis, Vernon Lee, Jack Gordon, Robert Elmo, Sallie Jean, Randell Delano, Thomas Clark and Patricia Nell.

In the 1950's Charles and Maude moved to Southerland, Oregon where his 2 sons Vernon and Robert were living, and one of his brothers Thomas Allen. He got a job in a plywood mill and Maudie got a job managing a motel. They lived there a few years before relocating to Ashland County, Ohio and settling near their 2 sons Jack and Randell Hargis and daughter Patricia (Hargis) Rook. That is where Charles and Maud were living when he died on 1 Jul 1976.  Maudie Marie (Chapman) Hargis later decided to move to Milford, Ohio where she had 3 children living, Vernon, Sally "Peggy" and William, along with grandchildren. Maude Marie (Chapman) Hargis died on 9 Oct 1985 in Mercy Hospital, Clermont County, Ohio. Charles and Maudie Hargis are buried in Brown Cemetery, Morehead, Rowan County, Kentucky.
