This is the passenger list from the ship Uhland on 17 June 1850, Port of New Orleans. While Wilhelm Kohus states he is a laborer from Hanover, he is listed after two people from Hanover who are tailors and all headed for Ohio. This could just be coincidence, or could this be Johann Kohues traveling under a different name to avoid detection by the authorities? Though the spelling here is Kohus, John's brother Hermann's name was also spells Kohus instead of Kohues on his passenger list when he arrived on the same ship, Uhland, two years later in 1852.
